Hajime No Ippo - My thoughts 14 episodes in

Fred Pilarczyk

So much bad hair! Fortunately the animation is amazing.

I am slowly working my way through Hajime No Ippo, an anime about a guy named Makunouchi Ippo who goes from a no-confidence nice guy to an awesome boxing nice-guy.

While the visuals feel dated (it started in 1989 for the manga), the animation is so extremely well done, especially during the boxing scenes. It matches the intensity of the action perfectly.

The version I am watching is fan-subbed, so there is something to be said about some bad translation, but the story is so good you pretty quickly overlook it. "I want to dive lost mind." Definitely!

I also appreciate that for being a sports drama there is a good amount of humor. Ippo is awkward and goofy, as any teenager is. His friends are weird, sometimes creepy, and on the whole pretty lovable.  Sometimes things feel a little too risqué, but it balances itself out in silly and humorous ways.

I think stories like Hajime No Ippo exemplify to me the power of manga and anime. They are able to tell simple, powerful stories, ones that make you relate to the characters. The older I get, I want more stories that end when they are done telling what they have to tell. Too often things wear out their welcome, which is one of the main reasons I've given up on American comic books. I like real endings. Japanese media does this very well (usually).

Anyway, just wanted to post this recommendation to a great series. I'm on episode 15 of 76, and thing the entire thing is going to be an epic ride.

So much determination.

Opening title sequence. Amazing!

Here's the lyrics. I have no idea what it means, but who cares?

ryuusei no ai ga kimi ni isshun no hikari okutteru...
eien no yume o mite...rolling go...

ame ga furi yamazu ni kata o nurasu keredo
SUPIIDO wa yurumenu mama...street go...
soshite toki wa nagare dare mo kawaru keredo
boku wa ano hi no mama...street song...

I want to dive...lost mind...
I want to dive...lost mind...
I want feeling...I want feeling...itsumo...
I want to dive...lost mind...
I want to dive...lost mind...
why, why, why, why? I want to dive!
feeling over...

ryuusei no ai ga kimi ni isshun no hikari okutteru...
eien no yume o mite...lonely go...

nani mo kangaezu ni ima o ikiru dake no

I want to dive...lost mind...
I want to dive...lost mind...
why, why, why, why? I want to dive!
feeling over...

ryuusei no ai ga kimi ni isshun no hikari okutteru...
ryuusei no ai ga jibun ni eien no yume okutteru...
