As a kid I remember the tree outside of our house used to have locust shells on it every summer for quite a few years. I found them fascinating to pick up and use as monsters when I would play. Then one year, they were gone (I think pesticides killed them), and eventually I stopped looking.
I never saw them in Colorado, which made me sad. I was happy to see this visitor when I let my dogs out. They looks as otherworldly to me now as they did when I was young. Living in New Jersey again has it's perks!
